Saturday Jul 6                                                  Sunny & cloudy                                                Castlegar, BC
Today was market day. Time to visit the Farmer's Market at the CPR Station Museum parking lot.

Boy were we underwhelmed. Not to be critical but a couple of weeks ago in Creston, we visited their Farmer's Market. That was a going concern. I didn't count them, but I would say there were maybe a half dozen vendors this morning. Very disappointing for early July.

After the market we walked to the library and picked up some books. Okay,
where to next? I suggested we go check out the Brilliant suspension bridge.
Every time we go north on the bridge over the Kootenay River, we can see
the suspension bridge down and to the right.
The Brilliant suspension bridge was in use from 1913 until 1966 when the current highway bridge was built.

There is lots of information on the display boards at both ends of the bridge.

Click on the thumbnails below to read the boards.
We walked across the bridge and saw this...the remnants of the old highway.
While Jen walked back to Alfie, I wandered up the path to see where it ended (right by the new highway as it turned out.

On the way back to the suspension bridge, I snapped this shot.
I walked back across the bridge. I thought there was a trail on this side, so I went to investigate. Nope, nothing but a dead end.
So I turned around and headed back to Alfie. This picture shows both bridges, old and new.
When I returned to the van, Jen suggested that we should check out the Verigin Memorial Park, on the hillside above where we are now, overlooking the river. It is a "significant Doukhobor Heritage Site".  You can learn more about the Union of Spirtual Communities of Christ Doukhobors here.
The view from the gardens - just lovely looking across the river and down the valley. That's our RV park straight ahead.
Next stop my illustrious tour guide suggested was the Castlegar Golf Club. Hmmm, maybe a place for lunch? Perhaps, but Jen wanted to check out the RV park there first.

So we pull in to the RV park office and who should appear but Susan, the park host. We met Susan 3½ years ago at Salmon Point RV Park between Courtenay/Comox and Campbell River on the Island. We spent two weeks at Salmon Point - the first two weeks of our full-timing adventure in Ali! It is a small world!!
The golf course is in a valley behind and above the airport. It looks like a really nice course. On the way day, I snapped this shot of the airport.
The final stop of the day was a the fruit stand across from the entrance to the airport. Then it was back to Ali. Busy day, I'm ready for a rest.

Tomorrow, not sure yet. We'll see what the weather's like in the morning. See you then.
