Saturday Jul 20                                                Sunny & warm                                                         Trail, BC
Just after noon we headed out along Hwy 22A towards the Canada/US border. We pulled into Beaver Creek Kiwanis Campground. We wanted to check out for posible future visits. Not a big campground, but some sites back right onto the Columbia River. Really a pretty spot.
Continuing south, we drove past the airport and the industrial area and just before the border, saw this display at the side of the road.
On the other side of the Columbia River is the site of Fort Shepherd. Looking across the river, there is nothing visible of the old fort.
Continuing our journey south we arrive at the Pend d'Oreille river crossing and the Waneta Dam. Click on the picture to see a video of the Waneta Dam taken from the railway bridge.
As I was sitting on the concrete barrier waiting for the traffic to pass, I saw this strange looking vehicle coming across the bridge. A little bit of research later, you can read about at Babes Auto.
So that is the Waneta Dam. The turning for the Seven Mile dam is back up the highway a bit. I think it might be a gravel road but let's go check it out.

On the way to the turnoff, I was intrigued by this. I just had to stop and investigate.

It's a "derail" switch on a track leading to/from a siding. It's designed to stop a runaway car from reaching the main line. Looks like the track has seen a lot of wear and tear.

So we arrive at the turnoff to the Seven Mile Dam to find out that the road is paved! Off we go!
The Pend d'Oreille river valley sure is pretty.
Jen took some pictures on the return trip.
We stopped when we turned the corner and were looking up the Columbia River. I walked back up the highway (you can just see Alfie in the distance) and took this picture.
Then I did a 180 and took this picture of the Canadian/US border buildings under the shiny roofs.
Well, it has been an interesting trip out. Two dams and a couple of really pretty river valleys. Too bad the pictures don't do the views more justice.

That's it for today. Tomorrow is Sunday. I think we will just relax at the park and let the weekend people get home.

See you later.
