Sep 27 - Long Beach, WA
We awoke to a cool, but breathtakingly beautiful sunny morning on the Washington coast. We couldn't let this day go by without getting out and enjoying the lovely weather! So after Skyping with good friend Gary in Bridgewater, NS and good friend Donna in Richmond, BC, we set off to Long Beach via Ilwaco. We drove out by the Ilwaco harbour and took this picture.
Long Beach, WA claims the world's longest beach - whether that's true or not, I dunno, but there sure is a lot of sand!
We did the loop around to Cape Disappointment before heading to Long Beach.
Well that was enough excitement for one day - we made it out alive!

But unfortunately over the years, others haven't been so lucky.
I asked Jen if we should drive on the beach - there were other vehicles there - and she said "Sure".

Ha ha, noooo she didn't but I thought it would be fun to at least give it a go. (I ignored the big tow truck with a pickup hooked on the back that had obviously towed out of the surf!)

Well it was exciting to say the least. Take a look at these pictures that Jen took from the van.
Now would be a good time to turn around...uhhh... wet sand or dry sand? Okay, wet sand.....turn left!
Woah, is that the ocean coming at us??!!
This dark shape is the right outside rear view mirror --->
Okay, I think we will make it but this "wet" sand sure feels soft!

No, we did not follow the tracks. We continued turning left, but it sure looked like others had been adventuresome!
We drove back into Long Beach and stopped at the Cottage Bakery for some refreshments. Just some of the goodies:
After the bakery, we drove up the peninsula to Ocean Park. The whole peninsula is very "cottage-y". We wondered what you did with such a fantastic beach at your doorstep when there were signs advising against swimming because of large surf, undertows, and the like.

I brought my bike along thinking I could at least pedal one-way, so on the way back home, Jen left me in Long Beach and I pedaled the 8 miles back to River's End along Hwy 101 which has nice wide bike lanes on either side. It took me about 35 minutes.

So now we're back it is time to do chores like laundry. So that's it for today.

We're off to the Oregon coast in the morning. Don't know exactly where we'll stop, but we'll let you know.
