Aug 10 - Penobscot Narrows & Fort Knox, ME
And a piece of the bridge to show its construction.
Did you notice the tops of the towers? They're different. The far one is the observatory. Here's the bridge from the lookoff on the other side of the river.
Around the bend just ahead was the Penobscot Narrows bridge.
We left the campground this morning in the sunshine. We sure
have been lucky with the weather. Other than a bit of fog on
Digby Neck, we've had good travelling weather during our trip.

My tour guide today suggested that we stop at the Penobscot
Narrows bridge and Fort Knox. No, not that Fort Knox, that's in
Kentucky. No, this Fort Knox was built to stop the British
expanding their territory in the new world way back when.

We turned left out of Bucksport and saw Fort Knox in the
distance.

So now we're off to Fort Knox, just around the corner.
At the rig, looking back to where I'd been.  And in case you're wondering what the view was like, check this out.
It was quite the view. Can you spot Alfie, Ali, and Jen (in the green jacket)?
(I apologize for the "amateur" video. I tried to do it in a hurry before more people arrived.)
We stopped at the ticket booth and pay our entrance fees - $8.00 for both of us to the observation tower and Fort Knox.

Okay so I'm off to the observation tower by myself. 42 stories tall with a single elevator. The elevator goes to the lowest of the three glassed-in levels in 50 seconds. Two sets of 18-step stairs lead to the observation deck proper on the top level.
The original bridge on this site was constructed in 1931.
We enjoyed our thoroughly delightful visit to these two sites. But we must be on our way to Boothbay.

Hwy 1 is busy, snaking its way through small towns along the coast. Camden was one such town. We sat in a lineup for over ½ hour just to get through the place. In about 400' of downtown businesses, people were parallel parking their cars and pedestrians were crossing in crosswalks; resulting in a major delays in both directions.

Here are some shots from around the fort.
Quite the impressive structure.

We kept a lookout for a roadside park to stop and have lunch. The only one we found was about a mile and a half from the turnoff to Boothbay - we continued on to the campground.

We booked into Shore Hills Campground and RV Park just after 1 p.m.

This place is busy. I was told that was because everyone takes their holidays in August. Not just Maine people, either!

We decided to stay an extra day so we head out Saturday morning for who knows where at this point.

Stay tuned.
